My mom and I just had this huge fight about the way I wear contacts. I'm going to sound ridiculous because I know she's right... I got contacts and glasses at the same time two years ago. I never wear my glasses because I look horrible in them, they feel like a weight on my face, and I can't stand how my side vision is blurry. Contacts fix all of those problems, and I've never had any problems with them at all. I wear them all day except for about 4 hours before I go to sleep so that my eyes can have a bit of a rest from them. My mom told me that it's not enough, and that I should take them out longer and skip a few days of wearing them from time to time. The thing is, I cannot stand glasses. They bother me so much! Can I really have problems in the future from the way I treat my eyes right now? And I'm sort of scared because I have an eye doctor appointment tomorrow, and I'm afraid he's going to like...say I can't wear contacts anymore or something. Wow, I have such irrational fears. But I just had to say all that. Some advice please?

Everything your mother told you is completely untrue. Most people who have contacts where them tell bedtime then take them out and go to bed and put them back in upon awaking. So no your not going to have a problem with them. What you are doing is what everyone does. Secound if you like them why not try Focus Night and Day contacts. You can leave them in for 30 days totally safely. I DO!!! Dont worry about it and tell her shes full of it and almost everyone in the world does what you are doing.

yeah your mom is right!!! i actully went to the eye doctor and he told me my eye sight got worse in a few months than it has in my whole life. i use to just take my contacts before i went to bed. i dont like to wear my glasses so i just dont wear contacts on saturday unless i go somewhere. and i take them out rigth when i get in from school. when you wear contacts they dont get enough oxygen. your eyes need to breath. i also noticed that when i was wearing my contacts more people use to coment on how horrible and red my eyes looked. people htought i did drugs . but now that i let my eyes get oxygen they look clean and glossy!! ohh and alot of people think it is ok to swim in contacts... IT IS NOT!!! just because everyone may sleep in there contacts or swim in them doesnt eman its right.

again you are wrong. Contacts are made to wear on a daily basis 7 days a week. If your eyes do get red which they shouldnt means your either wearing the wrong diamater or base curve in the lense or having a reaction to the lens or solution or you just didnt wash your hands or the lens properly to insure proper cleanliness. You are very correct on the aspect that they do need to be removed at bed time if they are normall contacts if you have extended wear you can wear them for one month with no problems if you follow the correct procedure to the letter and you wont have a problem. Some people do have problems with their eyes where they cant wear contacts for very much time during the day such thing that would cause this is Belephritis (excuse the spelling) dry eyes "in such case you shouldnt wear a contact periond. Then you can have problems with the cornea such as corneal eroosion and if such then you can have problems and should not wear them. Also the previous poster has to realize she is very young and at that age vision does change very frequently sometimes several times in a year which will slow down when you get closer to 30 years of age. so again you are very wrong on your facts please do research and talk to drs before you make a claim which holds very little truth. Dont belive me look them up on the net contacts and glasses if worn and handled properly is perfectly fine. Yes visiion will change even if you dont have glasses or contacts. I guarantee that aske any perons wearing glasses if their vision has changed they will say yes it is natural as the eye ages your vision decresses by not wearing what the dr perscribed you risk worsening vision with not having properly focused eyes secound your risk having trouble in school, then if you drive you risk your life and everyone else you have in the car. Its a lie that it will make your vision worse dont trust me or anyone else cause you never know where someone gets their facts. The fact is young people are not drs neither am I so listen to the dr not this bull.

Never, EVER wear contacts while sleeping, even if they are claimed to be night and day. MAJOR No-No. Even the supposed safe ones aren't- just not good for your eyes. No exceptions.

you are partially correct some people can have severe problems even with the day and night contacts. When a dr prescribes night and day contacts you have to come in for two or three follow ups after that to make sure your eyes are okay and vision exams on a 6 month to 1 year basis to make sure nothing happens. They havent been on the market long enough to say 100% if the companies things are true but I am willing to go with the fda and say they are ok to wear. But I will say there is a chance with extended wear but that is why you need to see the eye dr quite often when you have those lens up to 3 times more often like I do at this time

None of what your mom said is true. I've had contacts for over a year now. I put them in when I get up every moring ( around 6:30 AM) and I take them out right before I go to bed (around 9:30 PM on school nights, later on the weekends) and they have never caused any problems for me. There are some brands of contacts that you can even wear over-night (like those 30-day contacts), I guess it sorta depends on the brand but anyway, what your mom said isn't true. As for glasses, I've had them since 3rd grade and I hated them at first, but then I got used to them. When I started wearing contacts, everyone was like "aw, I miss your glasses! you looked so cute with them!" but my point is, the more you wear your glasses, the more you will get used to them. Okay, well I hoped I ed!

Well, she is right in a way. Some products such as the ReNu with Moisture Loc which is a cleaner for contact lenses that has been known to cause gal kerititis which may lead to blindness if left untreated for a short amount of time. Not all do that but keep that in mind.
