Is This Normal?
I got my period about five months ago and didn't get it for a couple months after that. I have had it twice since then, and my flow has been really heavy. I bleed through a super Playtex Sport tampon in two hours for the first two or three days! It seems like all of my friends do not have this problem at all. It makes me so nervous in school; I always feel like I am going to bleed through and have to change whenever possible. Is this normal? Will it change later? Also, is it normal for my flow to be heavier in the morning and get lighter throughout the day? Please help!

Looks like Kim covered most of it about your period instabilities, so I won't repeat what she said. Now... In terms of keeping yourself clean (it is surprising that you jumped to tampons so fast after starting your period), you could back-up your tampon with a pad or pantiliner. Since tampons are internal, you generally don't feel when it starts getting full and by the time you do find out, it'll be too late and already have leaked. Since pads/pl's are external, when they get wet, you can begin to feel some moisture and it'll allow you to have a cue to change, rather than being unprotected and leaking all over your panties.

You never want to feel distracted throughout the day by your period because it'll cause you to lose concentration of the task-at-hand. This is true especially when engaged in school or work, so finding the best combination of protection to keep you clean is essential and that's only something you can test out and know. Your period will change over time, especially since you just recently got it, so this may only be a very temporary thing. It might feel inconvenient to go back to using pads since I guess that'd be the reason why you began using tampons so soon, but the inconvenience/feeling is worth your peace-of-mind about not having to obessively worry about leaking.

In regards to "changing whenever possible" through the day, that is a normal and practical thing to do. There are times that we cannot control our schedules or other factors, so it is important to take advantage of our changing opportunities. Perhaps you are stuck in class, a fire alarm goes off (and you're stuck outside), or you're going to be late for class and don't have time to change. In the future, your biggest friend will be your knowledge of your period, how heavy, changes in flow over your period, how often you need to change and in turn, manging your period will become simple!

If you just started getting your period 5 months ago, your periods will usually be irregular for the first two years. That means for example you may get your period for three months in a row, then skip three months. Perhaps, you might get your period every other month. Every girl is different. E-mail me back on here and I will try to help you.
