Having a Hard Time
It seems like I always have my period every other month, and when I do have it, it's wicked heavy! I hate the feeling of it, and I'm worried that it's not normal to skip and have it only every other month. The worse part is that I never know when it's actually going to start! All my friends have had it every month, and I feel different. Also, I have had it for less than a year, and I am having a hard time still with feeling the wetness and trying to predict when my period is going to start because it does skip around a lot. Is this normal?

It is perfectly normal. Usually, your period will become regular within 6 months to one year after you have started. If you hate the feeling of a heavy flow, you can try tampons, if you haven't already.

It is not unusual for girls who have recently started their period to be irregular. MOST girl's body do not stabilize right away, especially because you've had it for less than a year. The feeling of having your period isn't the most pleasant and I don't think many girls would actually consider it comfortable or fun in any way. I guess it would be particularily worse for you if you're a heavy flow-er. Once you give your body some time to mature, it will be more consistent and if you're lucky, might even lighten up a bit.

If you still find after maturation that your body still hasn't adjusted, you should consult your doctor for more information and to determine a best course of action so that way you can efficiently deal with your period. Your period won't go away for many years to come (unless you're consider doing something drastic), so best to learn to deal with it in a way that it allows you to function normally on a day-to-day basis.

How do you deal with your period now? You mention heaviness, but haven't described how badly it really is. Maybe you just have a different idea of what is considered "heavy". Do you use tampons, pads, reusables? How often do you go through them or change? Are you using what is right for your flow needs? The most important thing to controlling a heavy-flow is to find what protection fits your needs. Also, how long does the heaviness last? I would dare say that a majority of girls will find that they will have at least a heavy period (pardon the pun) during their period, whether it is a day for some and throughout the entire flow for others.

If you could provide more information in regards to your "heavy flow" we can certainly try to advise you on how you can better deal with it or maybe you should simply consult a medical professional as their opinions are much more qualified.

It's normal for your period to skip around during the first year or two from when you have your first. I have a heavy flow too and the best thing to do is just find a good product that keeps you dry and comfortable. You might want to try wearing a pantyliner during the day in case you start, that way you'll have some time to get a pad or tampon if it comes unexpectedly. Keep track of when you DO get it, and mark on a calendar how many days it lasts, when you feel cramps, etc... This will help as your period starts to regulate and eventually you may start to notice a pattern. Aside from the pantyliners, when you think you feel it coming (cramps, wetness, etc.) put on a pad just in case. Sometimes I wear one a day or so before my period starts.
