Tampons; Should I Try Them?
I'm 13, and I started my period this summer and used pads. I couldn't go swimming because I had to use tampons, but I didn't. I'm afraid to use them. Will they hurt me? I have used pads, and they work. I'm just so scared to try tampons. I don't even know how to insert them. Plus, will I be the only one wearing them at my school? Most girls use pads, right? What should I use, pads like I usually use, or should I go for it and try tampons? But first, I need to know how to insert them. Please help me.

tampons are just fine! i first tried them when i had to go swimming and if you do it right, they are completely pailess, let you do lots more things and are less noticable especially next to a tall, thin tube of lip gloss in a purse or small bag.

I'm 16 but it hurts to use tampons. I still use them for school and such, but it's a pain. I stick with pads when I'm at home and tampons when I go out.

Hey Samantha,

I agree with many of your points, however, I do believe you would need to change your tampon just like a pad. Both pads and tampons come in various absorbancies, but still, both require regular changing. Unless a girl wears her pads improperly, they should not be falling or dropping out. With wings, the chances of that happening are even slightly lowered. I am both a pad and tampon user, so I don't have a bias towards either.

I use both non-applicator and applicator tampons, so I can also attest to the smallness of it. They're easy to carry and can even be hidden in the most unseen places for the shy girls. I play both soccer and tennis and I can strongly say that a well placed pad will NOT fall out even in the most intense of sports. The only sport that is pad-restricting is water sports where an internal form of protection is a necessity. Just like a pad can be misplaced, tampons can also be misplaced causing it to drop out. I would imagine the feeling of a pad ready-to-drop out is much more noticable than a tampon, in which case, you may be able to catch (not literally) the pad before it disgustingly hits the ground, !

I got my period when I was in grade six, so I was twelve. I started out with pads, but in the summers i noticed it wiuld get really warm and unpleasent down there, which sometimes makes you feel like you are leaking even though you arent. I was taught by my best friend how to use a tampon, and even though it seems like a really big deal and sounds like pain, its nothing like that AT ALL!!! To insert a tampon without an applicator, all you have to do is relax and slowly slide it in (if it is your first time I reccomend that you try the smallest kind of tampon possible which is used for light days - and dab a tiny bit of KY jelly on it) and once you have your pointer finger touching your skin around that area, it is most likely in. Then stand up and move around a bit, if you can still feel it then try to push it in a bit farther, you will always be able to feel it a bit, but if it doesnt hurt you then you should be fine. I find that it is easier to do sports with a tampon in, you dont have to worry about changing it or having it fall off in the middle of a fast paced sport. I find that most of the people at my school use tampons, they are easier to cary around with you and lets you wera whatever you want. If you want to talk more, email me k? even tho i dont know you i would still like to help if you need it!!!

Well, your just 13, so i would stick to pads for now. Wait until your you know what grows a little bit more, and then try tampons. I am 13 also, and i still use pads.

When you get into water it actually stops your period.

pads aren't so bad...it just takes some getting used to. i thought about trying tampons once but decided not to even though it gets really hot down there when wearing a pad. but it didn't bother me enough to try tampons.

At your age most girls wear pads but that will change when you get older. I think you should stick to pads.

"Will they hurt me?"

That depends on whether your anatomy is ready for it. Only you can find that out. If your body is ready to accept the tampon, then you also have to use it properly to prevent it from hurting. In general, tampons should not hurt you when used properly. Your first attempts might hurt in the event you are unable to following insert the tampon as directed. Also, use the absorbancy which fits you best, because tampons which are larger than you can't handle will hurt. To begin, always try the smallest possible tampon and work your way up as need be when you feel ready. Some girls ALWAYS use the same tampon size because they're comfy with it. For instance, I usually use slenders or regulars, rarely super+.

"I'm just so scared to try tampons."

That will only make the above worse. When you're scared, your vaginal muscles will naturally contract. Doing so may hinder your ability to insert the tampon or make it uncomfortable, thus reinforcing your fear of tampons.

"I don't even know how to insert them.

There are many resources available on the web and the instructions that come with every box. Your best way to learn how to insert them is practice and no amount of instruction will replace that experience.

"Plus, will I be the only one wearing them at my school?"

You would only know if you asked. However, I don't see any reason why you need to consider what other girls use to make your decision of what YOU use. This is your personal hygiene and your own comfort.

"Most girls use pads, right?"

Depends the location of where you ask the question. Girls globally, locally, continentally, etc. all have different statistics. It seems that in general, girls on TeenFX are larger pad users than tampon users, but that only reflects the community here.

"What should I use, pads like I usually use, or should I go for it and try tampons?"

Use what fits for you and your activities. Obviously tampons is a must for swimming, however, you can use pads for all other times in between. I am like that as well. I use tampons for swimming and for the most part, just strictly use pads. If you're uncomfortable using tampons then you will have to sacrafice water activities during your period. Any other activity in a pad should not be affected. Of course tampon proponants will say that pads negatively affect their ability to perform their daily functions, but as a pad user, I can carry out my daily life including vigorous sports comfortably using pads. Therefore, you simply need to recognize the pros and cons of different types of protection.

"But first, I need to know how to insert them."

Just as everything else in life that you've done up to this point, LEARN.

Hope you find a way to suit your needs!

I think you should stay with pads. You're only 13, which is MUCH too young and tampons hurt a lot. I tried tampons once when I was 15 and all I can say is never again! Its unfortunately true that as you get older, less and less of us still wear pads but at your age I would bet that almost all the girls wear pads. I don't see anything wrong with wearing pads only.
