Period Privacy in WOMEN's Bathroom
I always think about the reasons why menstrual products companies are so intent on making everything so discreet. Yes, I'm sure for some of us, our brothers, fathers, sons, uncles, boyfriends, husbands don't want to know all our menstrual needs, but certainly, most of the time we are involved in using menstrual products is behind closed doors. Very few countries in this world utilize public washrooms, therefore the only individuals who will be in the bathroom with you while you are changing your maxi pad, tampon, cup, sponge or cloth pad will generally be WOMEN.
Part of being a woman is the ability to have menstrual cycles and bear children. Why does it matter so much in the WOMEN'S bathroom if the girl you don't know can hear you opening a wrapper or any type of menstrual-product covering? It might be nice to have discreet looking protection, but making "quiet" pouches, is that REALLY necessary?
I can honestly say for the most of us, I do hope we change our products behind closed doors and generally with those of the same gender. Is it worth paying extra money for companies to invent a product to hide your period from another girl/woman in the girl's bathroom? I'm really sure your girl friend next door really cares about the fact you are changing a pad! I think she'd be more worried if you didn't change it and smelt like crap. Even with the current reminders of sex, drugs, and alcohol in this society, menstrual products need to be practically invisible and made so that even if a male individual were to see it, they [gasp] wouldn't know what it was!
Why are we so concerned about hiding our products or usage of them, especially to girls who will, has or had their period?
