My Best Friend Almost Died the Other Night
On Saturday night, March 25, 2006, my best friend went into a coma. She passed out, stopped breathing, and had to be taken to the ER and put on a respirator. This was all thanks to alcohol -- not drugs, not pills, but alcohol alone.

She was going to a dance and decided to drink with a group of friends beforehand. One shot led to another and on the way to the dance, she passed out in the "party bus". No one seemed to care because they were worried about themselves getting caught for drinking alcohol.

One person got help from a chaperon, and he is a true hero. They called 911, and an ambulance rushed her to the hospital. I saw her that night, with tubes down her throat and in her nose and IVs in her wrists and heart monitors to check her vitals. She looked like she was almost dead, because at one point she was.

The next day she woke up from her coma and thanked God that she got a second chance. It scares me to death to think that I almost lost one of my best friends because of a night of partying. Alcohol poisoning is real. It CAN kill you. Alcohol, when drunk enough, can poison your body and stop your functions. Please think twice about taking those extra shots to see just how "wasted" you can get. It's not worth it.

Some chaperon. Oh boy, where to start. You want to go to a party and drink alcohol, and do drugs and stuff like that? Then go ahead and be a part of the statistics. Go ahead and be condescended by adults, by your parents who have to constantly lecture you on drugs, sex, and peer pressure. God, don't you guys get it? When you enter into that world, you're signing an unwritten contract that you you are aware of the consequences that might occur. If you drink too much alcohol, you just might die! Duh! But all you guys think about is looking cool in front of your friends, and making sure you have the best night of your lives every day. Stay home and read a book for once. If you read, the consequence of that is you might learn something, instead of almost killing yourself. How's that for a change? You gonna stop stacking onto the teenagers' stereotypes and start doing something about it? You're always telling adults you can handle things on your own, trying to be independent. This is the exact reason why we're being treated like kids.

I always knew that alcohol was bad for you, but I didn't know it was that bad. I'm going to be turning 21 in 4 days, but I'm NOT drinking EVER. Because I have Epilepsy and I take too many medications. Alcohol mixed with the medications could have a bad effect on me or possibly kill me. So I had made the decision a long time ago to never drink alcohol in my life. But I'm so glad that your friend got a second chance. That's really scary. I sincerly hope that she is feeling better soon. Thanks for the article. And you're right, alcohol isn't worth it.

I drink occasionally, and although I don't usually have more than a few at a time, its always a good reinforcement for what can happen. I hope she has a fast recovery.
