Birth Control For Acne?
Have any of you ever used birth control pills to get rid of severe acne? My acne right now is not very bad, but I'm not really happy with my skin. My dad is a doctor, and he said that he could get me birth contol pills that would reduce acne (and help with cramps).

I was wondering if any of you had tried the pill for control of acne as I really prefer to avoid medication if possible, and I only want to try this method of treatment if it is really going to help. My friend's neighbor tried it, and she said it really helped her, but another person I talked to said it didn't do anything but mess up her periods, so I'm looking for more opinions.

When I was 14, my doctor put me on BC to help keep my period regular, and reduce the pain of cramping. It helped with that, and with my severe acne. If you're hesitant about trying it, talk to your doctor first and discuss alternatives. It is different for everyone, it may work for some, it may not work in others. This is really something only your doctor would be able to really answer.

My brother and I use Differin for our acne and you see the difference within three days. It was prescribed to us and I totally recommend it. I know nothing about BC pills for pimples.

This is just advocating minors to have sex - pretty soon parents and doctors will catch up with it and birth control won't be available for teens. (I can't wait 'til that happens!)

I am on birth control pills for my skin, the brand I use is called Dianette. I had awful skin when I was 16 and my mum brought me to the doctor to get it sorted, I was put on a tetracycline based medication which cleared up the skin on my back, shoulders and chest which was fantastic but I still got some spots on my face (though nothing like what I had before) However, about a year ago (when I was 18) the doctor suggested that I switch to Dianette, probably in part because she knew I was sleeping with my boyfriend, anyway my point is that my skin has got so good since then. I rarely get spots at all and when I do they're just tiny pimples, even my skin tone has got better and there's no redness at all, people started commenting on how great my skin was looking after about two weeks and these days people keep asking me what I'm washing my face with! To someone who used to have terrible acne, it's so amazing you wouldn't believe it. I won't be on this long term but you wouldn't believe the difference it's made. Maybe try it, if you find after a month it isn't suiting you then just stop taking it!
Oh, and my breasts went up to a C cup after I started taking the pill - yay! (they were previously a smallish B)

Hey ..I'm on BC at the moment...for the two reasons you've listed and for just BC. I have found that it does help for the most part with the acne...and my cramps have gotten a lot worse. It is different for everyone though. If you'd rather not take medication then I would not do it but that's up to you. Good luck w/ your decision!!

The only way birth control pills can mess up a girl's period is if she doesn't take them consistently. Most women do gain weight while they are on bc, mostly from water retention. The positive side effect is that it does clear up most peoples' acne. And FYI to the person below me, some people don't grow out of the acne phase til a lot later on in life, and it's a tough thing to deal with so don't tell her just to deal with it.

Anyways, bc pills are only just a short term solution. You can't take them for a long period of time, because they contain estrogen. Too much estrogen can give you certain types of cancers.
