Terry Fox
Every Canadian knows who Terry Fox is, but I have always wondered if Americans do too? Had his story reached everyone south of the border? He is a hero and a legend to anyone who has had themselves or known someone else with cancer.
Terry Fox was diagnosed with cancer more than twenty-five years ago. The young Terry was a great athlete, but unfortunately the cancer had hit his leg, and it had to be amputated.
Despite this setback, it did not stop Terry from achieving such an amazing journey nobody would ever imagine possible, and nobody would ever forget.
With one artificial leg, Terry decided to run across Canada. He set out from St. John's Newfoundland determined to make it all the way to the British Columbia (about 5,300 Miles). However, his tremendous efforts went and support given by Canadians all over, his journey was cut short in Thunder Bay, Ontario when his cancer had spread to his lungs, and he was unable to continue.
Terry Fox ran on one leg fighting the tremendous pain of the cancer spreading from St. John's Newfoundland to Thunder Bay Ontario, more than 2,600 miles. (For U.S.A that's further than Vermont to Nebraska). Terry raised more than $2,000,000 in his run twenty-five years ago, and today we carry on his legacy and run the Terry Fox run to help raise money for cancer.
It has been years since Terry Fox's journey ended, and the run will continue this September. I think it is an amazing thing and encourage everyone who can to get involved! The legacy of Terry Fox shows how much one person can affect the world!
