Acne Advice - A Medical Student's Prospective.
Hi, medical student here....there are 2 basically effective treatment options.

1) BenzaClin topical cream - 5% Benzoyl Peroxide and 1% Clindamycin which is an antibiotic

2) 1 Course of Accutane, as determined by your Primary Care Physician, as it has severe but "rare" side effects.

3) Benzoyl Peroxide is the ONLY PROVEN acne fighter, it's highly effective. Clean and Clear products are highly recommended.

***acne is not caused by foods, chocolate, masturbating...sex..whatever. Clogged pores are caused by a disorder of the oil glands that cause the pores to slaugh off and trap bacteria in there with the oil, the bacteria is Propionibacterium acnes, which is the bacteria that causes acne, this bacteria is anaerobic, meaning is doesnt require Oxygen. That bacteria is a normal inhabitant of the skin. It uses sebum /oil
as a nutrient for growth, therefore increases in follicles during puberty.***

Good Luck to you.

hey robert wondering if u could help me
Hi, i have tight skin, its combination but i also have eczema, my face is quite splotchy most of the time and itchy and flakey. Also my nose gets very shiny all the time. I have switched to a cream called QV which the hospitals use on sensitive skin to avoid reaction, and also use an eczema cream from my dermatologist. My big problem is the redness but also on my right cheek, beside my nose i have a section of my face which has very large hole-like pores. The area gets very irriatated and itchy and also will stand out as a different red then my face. I dont cover it with makeup as i'm afraid to get a reaction and I also put moisterizer on as it feels more dry and itchy without. I have had facials before which seem to minimize the appearance but i really hate it and want to get rid of it. Do you have any advice?

Bonnie,
people who wash their face will still get acne because the oils of the skin are still getting trapped inside the pores. This is because dead skin cells, which lie around the opening of the hair follicles are not shed properly and therefore trap sebum(oil) inside the pore. Acne is an immune response to bacteria, which as this med student has described...feeds off of this oil which is trapped. Your immune system sends a response to this bacteria, causing inflammation and a "pimple" is formed.
Mostly, it's a genetic thing...it just depends on what type of skin you have.
It doesn't matter how much you "wash" your face. In fact, washing your face too much can add to the problem.
You do not want to strip the skin of it's oils completely, or else it will go into over drive and produce more to compensate, and the problem will just compound itself especially if the skin becomes dehyrdated (lacking water). Keeping the skin hydrated in very important by using an oil free moisterizer and mild exfoliation can also help some people.

Also in addition to the other suggestion for medical treatments...
benzoyl peroxide and a topical antibotic mixture also has been proven to be very effective compared to using a topical antibotic OR benzoyl peroxide on its own.

I also recommend a topical treatment of 1-3% dalacin and solugel 8 compound, especially if you have oily skin.

Thanks! Clean and Clear is what I use, I'm glad to hear that its recommended. But how come with some people, I know they are clean and wash their face, but they still have bad acne?
