Ignorance...
I am 16 years old and getting rhinoplasty performed this summer (July 2002). I fully understand the risks (complications associated with general anesthesia, bleeding, etc.) but feel that it is nothing compares to the pain I've felt living this way. My nose tilts on one side (in a noticeably crooked way), has a huge hump, it's too wide, and the tip is too large. It also bleeds a lot. I hate it more than anything else in the world. I would be pretty, even gorgeous, without it, and such a more outgoing, happy person. Besides the repetitive "God made you who you are!! Accept yourself and work on your good points instead of going under the knife!!" comments, I have yet to hear a decent reason why I shouldn't have it. Come on, give me your best shot.
To every one of you who feel that nose surgery is stupid/vain and look down on those who get it done: Have you ever felt so insecure about your nose that it SEVERLY affected your personality, self-worth and relationships with others? Have you ever felt so miserable and depressed about it you honestly wanted to die? For most of you, I'm guessing no. So don't preach to me about vanity, because you have no idea. Instead of acting condescending and making ignorant blanket statements that all rhinoplasty/septoplasty is wrong, take a moment to consider WHY they're having it done, and if they have a good reason to do so.
Go ahead and argue, but in advance - nothing you can say will change my opinion. absolutely nothing. I posted this article in hopes that someone would stop being drawn into th stigma of plastic surgery and try and see it from someone in the situation.
